1930s

The 1930s were an amazing decade for Frankenstein. With the creation of the Universal Monsters franchise, Boris Karloff made Frankenstein's creature into the pop culture icon we know today. These early monster films were the public's first large exposure to horror as a film genre, and future horror films looked to Universal as a guidebook. My favorite Frankenfilm of the '30s is Bride of Frankenstein, 1935. James Whale directed it, as well as the original 1931 Frankenstein and 1933's The Invisible Man. Whale was openly homosexual throughout his entire adult life and Hollywood career, and you can certainly see that reflected in the campy nature of Bride.
